If over the course of owning your home you have accumulated some much stuff that your two-car garage is completely full than you might be the perfect candidate for a carport. I know recently I was when I discovered that I could not park my tow cars in the garage as an impending hail storm was heading in my direction.
After the storm passed and thankfully missed my small town in Oklahoma I immediately went out and purchase a metal carport. Let me share a few tips on my experience and why I feel they are worth having.
1) First of all you will find carports in many different sizes, styles and prices. From 10 by 20 to larger, wood, metal, fiberglass and ranging from a low end of $500 to well over $3000.
You will find many carports for sale as well as carport kits. Buy the one that fits your needs, give you some room to add more stuff later and is within your budget.
2) Installing a carport is not a very difficult task and most anyone with even the slightest skills can install one. You will be lifting some heavy bags of concrete and working with tools. If you haven’t done a lot of physical work recently hire someone to install the carport for your.
Installation for the most basic type of carport if simply digging 4 holes ad setting the corner posts which are usually metal. Once the post are set than you can put together the rest of the structure.
3) Before you even consider buying a carport you really need to do a little upfront homework. Check with your housing addition to make sure you are allowed to place a carport on your property. Some additions have it written in their code and do not allow it.
Also check you local city building department and ask if you need a permit.
Was it worth getting a carport. Heck yes, as the following week a hail storm did pass but my cars had no damage as they were park underneath our spanking new carports.
